The
Coast Guard is the United States' oldest, continuous sea service. For
decades the Coast Guard operated under the Department of Transportation,
and today is under the Department of Homeland Security. During time of
war, however, the Coast Guard can be, and has been, transferred to the
control of the U.S. Navy. Members of the Coast Guard have served in
every war in our Nation's history, performing heroically and earning one
Medal of Honor, 55@ Navy Crosses, 77@ Silver Stars, and a host of other
awards.
United States Coast Guard Heroes is a comprehensive (600+ pages)
compilation of awards of the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, Distinguished
Service Medals, Legion of Merits, Distinguished Flying Crosses, Coast
Guard Medals, and Navy and Marine Corps Medals to members of the U.S.
Coast Guard. Some of the most heroic peace-time actions are
vividly reflected in the citations of many of the latter of these.
This volume includes basic Coast Guard history, history behind the
various awards, and appendixes including analysis of awards by rank,
unit, and a chronological listing of valor awards. Additional appendixes
include U.S. Military leadership, and a comprehensive of nearly all U.S.
Coast Guard Flag Officers.
